Wild Alaskan Salmon

All of our salmon is caught in Alaskan waters and when possible from smaller artisan fisheries like Coastal Villages Group, 20 Native American Fishing villages whose lives are rooted in their local salmon fisheries.  These villages work together along the Kuskokwim, one of the longest and most northern rivers in Alaska.  That’s why we can bring you some of the richest Sockeye salmon you’ll find, and defined a “Best Choice for Sustainability” by Monterey Bay Aquarium’s Seafood Watch Program*.

Wild Albacore Tuna

All of our Albacore is caught off the coast of Hawaii through fishing co-operatives like Norpac, whose members lives are rooted in the albacore trade.  These fishermen work together to manage a sustainable fishery that will be healthy for generations.  So we can bring you some of the richest Albacore tuna you’ll find, and defined a “Good Alternative for Sustainability” by Monterey Bay Aquarium’s Seafood Watch Program*.

Fresh Jonah Crab

Jonah crab is found in deep waters and rocky bottoms, 50-100 miles off the New England coast.  Jonah crab populations have held steady for the past 50 years and are defined as a “Good Alternative” by the Monterey Bay Aquarium’s Seafood Watch program*.   We are working with our crabbers to use special “whale-safe” lines and traps, to minimize impact on the delicate ocean habitat. Because fishermen only keep adult males, Jonah crab populations are not currently at risk and will be around for many future generations to enjoy.

North Atlantic Lobster

Our wild caught lobster come from the North Atlantic are making a recovery in recent years thanks to strong, localized conservation efforts.   Lobstermen have self-imposed conservation measures including returning lobsters that are too small (babies) or too large (breeders) back to the ocean.  As a result, they throw back three lobsters for every one they catch.  Because of this co-operative, forward-thinking management system, the North Atlantic lobster population is healthy.

Fisheries and Oceans Canada manages 45 lobster fisheries, each with different seasons, quotas and sustainability measures adapted to meet that fishery’s unique situation. Overall, lobster populations in Canada are healthy and sustainably managed.

Wild Caught Atlantic Surf Clams

We use only fresh, wild caught Atlantic Surf Clams, harvested along the Atlantic Coast.  All of our clams are harvested in US fishing waters under US Federal regulations and are rated a “Good Choice” for sustainability by Monterey Bay Aquarium’s Seafood Watch Program*.

Clams are “filter feeders” using their siphons to pull in and then filter fine particles of organic matter which actually helps clean the ocean waters.  Clam Strips were first served in Ipswich, MA and made popular when they became a staple at Howard Johnson restaurants along the East Coast.

Alaskan Pollock

All of our Pollock is caught  in the icy-cold waters off Alaska’s rugged coast then flash frozen at sea and defined as a “Good Alternative for Sustainability” by Monterey Bay Aquarium’s Seafood Watch Program*.  Pollock are part of the Cod family and provide a delicate, flaky texture, perfect for our Alaskan Fish Nuggets.

Alaskan Pollock is one of the largest single-species fisheries in the world.  It’s managed by the National Marine Fisheries Service under the guidance of the North Pacific Fishery Management Council.  Sustainability practices include quotas, gear restrictions, limited entry, time and area closures, by-catch reduction measures, and observer monitoring.  Despite all these measures there is still some concern about impact on Chinook salmon populations, and habitat damage.  Blue Horizon Wild strongly supports the conservation initiatives being implemented to reduce by-catch and minimize damage to ocean floors.
